An Old Bike Worth About $100 + a New Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Lock Also Worth About $100 = Long Term Success with Operating/Parking Bikes Outside on/near the Mean Streets of San Francisco

This is Geary near Divis, a tough environment. Workers who park here seem to use yellow New York Locks. Have I seen lesser locks all busted up at this location? Yes I have. “Keepers” for one:

That’s not all you need tho. You also might want to:

– Lock/protect/jam up with superglue/regularly remove your wheels, headset, stem, saddle, lights etc.

– Have some sort of anti-flat tire approach, which can be done with the tubes and/or tires, since it might be a PITA to remove your hyper-secured wheels anywho, and actually having big tires helps with getting around town anyway, on the aforementioned, less-than-physically-perfect mean streets of SF.

And oh yeah, you’re gonna get into scrapes and minor mishaps at the very least, over the years. Accept this from the get-go, it’s sort of inherent. Hypervigilance, which is another way of saying paranoia, helps with safety. Imagine all drivers are newly-released ex-cons already having a bad day and you’ll do better than most.

Or maybe biking in SF isn’t for you – that’s a valid choice. Fundamentally, things have changed much the past few decades and they won’t change all that much in the coming few decades, sry.

To sum up, a security program, an anti-tire flat approach, hypervigilance, acceptance – all that costs what, several hundred dollars, about what you’d spend for 100 days of MUNI. And if you act like other long haulers on the Streets of San Francisco, you and your bike/lock combo could very well make it 10,000 days, how about that?

“They’re trying to kill me” Yossarian told him calmly.

“No one’s trying to kill you,” Clevinger cried.

“Then why are they shooting at me?” Yossarian asked.

“They’re shooting at everyone,” Clevinger answered.

“They’re trying to kill everyone.”

“What difference does that make?”
